About me

Bernd Farasin, Tasmanian cabinetmaker from Bruny Island.I was born in Vienna,  Austria in 1962, one of six children in the family.

I learnt my trade from my father, a cabinetmaker, who took me on as an apprentice and taught me all the traditional skills, mainly working with solid timbers.

I later worked with a big modern company utilising chipboard and solid timbers creating shop fittings, staircases and modern kitchens.

In 1990 I travelled to Bruny Island, a small island off Tasmania, to help a friend build a house, and I’m still here. I started my own company two years later.

I now specialise in solid timber work, as free as possible from chemicals. I source timbers from the local area and greatly favour using recycled timber.

I treat my materials with respect and mostly use my own mixture of oil and citrus thinners as finishes. Natural oils are so much better than synthetic, chemical based finishes. They are better for my clients and better for the environment . . . and better for me too. And they enhance the beauty of our timbers.

What I do

I make honest, reliable and durable furniture that is designed to last for generations, the antiques of the future.

I  create furniture that is simple, looks great and is fun to live with. I make sure customers knows what they are getting and get what they want and need. I know my furniture will last longer and will still look good when others are at their third kitchen.

The main part of my business is kitchens, bathrooms, bookshelves, wardrobes, tables and doors. In principal anything you can make out of timber.

I use mainly Tasmanian timbers, new and recycled.  Using old recycled eucalypt is like working with a different species. The timber is generally very hard, often very colourful and you find lots of feature in it. Some of these timbers come from trees which are more than 300 years old.

I source my timber from small sawmillers, some salvaged, some from forestry; most timber comes from the Huon, little bits from Bruny. A lot of the timbers come from my customers and I encourage them to seek out timbers for use in their homes.

For the interior of my cupboards I use Australian Plywoods.  The Plywood I use is free of emissions, and where possible I use FSC graded plywood, which means the timbers used is from sustainable resources.

I use modern technologies and modern European hardware.

For benchtops I use either solid timbers (recycled whenever possible), stainless steel, stone or artificial stone.

What I believe in

I believe in an honest job and in good communication.

I design furniture together with my clients and I also like to involve them in the manufacturing process where possible, including the oiling of the furniture.

I try to make kitchens that are beautiful, good to work in and healthy. I try to build a good relation to my customers and am open to changes. I contribute to a positive climate in the house. Every one of my kitchens is unique and planned together with the customer.

I know if I can get my customer involved in the creation of their furniture they will appreciate and look after their piece.
